That material specification does not establish a universal target rating or prove that a thinner plate will outperform another target. What Is SR500 Steel?
SR500 is the steel used for Dead Center Shooting Sports’s own target line. SSAB describes Ramor® SR500 as ballistic target steel for shooting ranges. Its published material specification is a starting point for selecting a plate, not a finished target’s firearm rating.
Our line includes standard shapes, and we review custom dimensions, thicknesses and mounting patterns for the intended application. The complete target and its instructions determine appropriate use. A material name alone does not establish safe distance, ammunition compatibility or service life.

Dead Center Shooting Sports offers two distinct target lines: our own SR500 targets and Challenge Targets’ AR500 systems. Neither steel name makes every finished product interchangeable. Choosing the Right SR500 Target Thickness
Choosing the correct steel-target thickness requires more than matching a target to a caliber. Projectile construction, ammunition type, impact velocity, shooting distance, mounting method, target angle, and the condition of the target all affect safety and service life. Thicker steel may provide additional resistance in demanding applications, but it does not make a target indestructible.
